Graduate Writing Awards

The Writing Program administers three graduate writing awards: the Turow-Kinder Prize for Fiction, the Graduate Nonfiction Award, and the Academy of American Poets/Graduate Poetry Award. Scroll down for award guidelines.  See the Award Winners page for previous prize recipients.

Turow-Kinder Award in Fiction 

Prizes totaling $600 will be awarded for a first, second, and third place short story or novel chapter written by a University of Pittsburgh MFA student.  

Submission Deadline: February 11, 2015

Submission guidelines: 

• Student must be enrolled in a graduate fiction writing course during the 2014-15 academic year, though work may be produced independently of this course. Only one submission per student per academic year will be considered. 

• All work must be submitted electronically to the following address:

https://pittwritingcontests.submittable.com/submit

• Title of file should be the title of your piece. Include NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION in the attachment/story document. 

• In the cover page portion of Submittable please include the following:

  1. Title of the Piece
  2. Full Name
  3. PeopleSoft Number
  4. Home Address
  5. Cell Phone Number
  6. Email Address
  7. Instructor’s Name
  8. “Turow-Kinder Award” clearly marked

Winners will be announced at the Creative Writing Awards ceremony in April 2014 and their names posted on the department website.

The Graduate Nonfiction Award

Prizes totaling $200 will be awarded for a first, second, and third place nonfiction manuscript written by a Pitt MFA student enrolled in a graduate nonfiction course during the 2014-15 academic year. 

Submission Deadline:  February 11, 2015

Submission guidelines:

• Manuscript must be no more than 4,000 words.

• Manuscript must have been written for a graduate nonfiction course.  Only one submission per student will be considered.

• All work must be submitted electronically to the following address:

• Title of file should be the title of your essay. Include NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION in the attachment/essay document.

• On the cover page portion on Submittable please include the following information:

  1. Title of the Piece

  6. Email Address
  7. Instructor’s Name

Academy of American Poets Graduate Poetry Award

Prizes totaling $600 will be awarded for a first, second, and third place poem written by an MFA student enrolled in a graduate poetry workshop during the 2014-15 academic year.

Submission Deadline:  February 11, 2015

Submission guidelines:

• Student must be enrolled in a writing class during the term of entry, though work may be produced independently of this class.

• Each student may submit as many as two poems.

• Submissions are anonymous. Use poem titles as title of entry.

• All work must be submitted electronically  to the following address:

https://pittwritingcontests.submittable.com/submit

•  Include NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION in submitted file.

• In the cover letter section of the Submittable site please include the following information:

  1. Titles of Poems
  2. Full Name
  3. PeopleSoft Number

  7. Instructor’s Name
