Graduate Writing Awards

The Writing Program administers three graduate writing awards: the Nordan-Kinder Prize for Fiction, the Graduate Nonfiction Award, and the Jean Meyer Aloe Graduate Poetry Award. Scroll down for award guidelines.  See the Award Winners page for previous prize recipients.

The Nordan-Kinder Award in Fiction 

A single $600 prize will be awarded for a short story or novel chapter written by a currently enrolled University of Pittsburgh MFA student. One entry per student. Judged by Anjali Sachdeva. 

The Graduate Nonfiction Award

A $200 prize will be awarded for nonfiction manuscript written by a current Pitt MFA student. One entry per student. Judged by Sarah Menkedick.

The Jean Meyer Aloe Graduate Poetry Award 

A $100 prize plus a $50 membership from the Academy of American Poets will be awarded for a poem by a currently enrolled Pitt graduate student. Students may enter up to three poems. Judged by Kelly Lorraine Andrews. 

The deadline for all awards is March 9

Winners will be announced at the Creative Writing Awards ceremony on April 12, 2019 and their names posted on the English Department website.
